Adobe announced new Photoshop capabilities on August 27, including the AI Assisted Editor, which remains in beta. It provides a dedicated prompt interface for Prompt to Edit, background removal, Generative Expand, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale and AI Markup, giving users a single place to explore edits without first learning every traditional tool.
It does not replace Pro Editor
AI Assisted Editor is an optional space inside Photoshop, not a replacement for Pro Editor. People who rely on layers, masks and precise selections can stay in the existing workspace, while others can describe an idea in natural language and return to the pro workflow to review it.
Adobe also puts Prompt to Edit in Pro Editor’s Contextual Task Bar. Users can edit a whole image with a prompt without opening the new interface, and each result becomes a generative layer in the layer stack for easier organization and reversal.
What tools are included?
The set covers background removal, object removal, canvas expansion, generative fill and resolution upscaling, with AI Markup for drawing where an edit should happen. Visual marks address a weakness of text-only prompts by circling a recolor area, pointing to an object or sketching a rough new shape.
The same Photoshop update also adds Light Adjustment Layer, Dynamic Text that can follow custom shapes or paths, and an Adobe Stock panel inside Photoshop. These are not all generative AI features, but they share the goal of reducing tool and window switching.
What does beta mean here?
AI Assisted Editor is still in beta, so its interface, model support, output quality and availability may change. Natural-language editing also does not automatically understand every brand rule; people should review work involving faces, trademarks, product details or commercial assets.
Adobe says Instruct Edit with Masks uses Firefly Image 5 to understand context and protect unmasked areas. That is a design goal, not a guarantee that every complex image will preserve every detail; edges, text and brand assets still need close review before delivery.
Why this update matters
Photoshop is not simply adding a larger generative button. It is combining natural language, visual markup and non-destructive layers. AI can propose and execute an initial edit, while composition decisions, rights checks and pixel-level finishing remain part of the creator’s workflow.
