Consumer Group Chat, AI-generated podcasts, Copilot Labs, and some Deep Research functionality will retire on August 18. Researcher is positioned as the main alternative for paid professional users.
The global rollout starts with mobile and web, while the new Windows and macOS experience will arrive over the following weeks. Timing can differ by platform, region, and account type.
What happens to data
Regular Copilot conversations, files, and account data will move gradually, but retired features may not preserve everything. Users should not assume Group Chat, podcasts, or research results will automatically carry over.
Microsoft says work and personal account data will remain separate. The consolidation concerns product entry points and service architecture, not mixing enterprise and personal data.
What users should do now
If you rely on Group Chat, AI podcasts, or consumer Deep Research, check before August 18 whether anything needs to be saved. Copy important results to your own documents or cloud storage instead of relying only on migration.
The change is also a reminder that experimental AI features can disappear as product strategy changes. A similar name or new entry point does not guarantee that old behavior remains.
